Almost a decade ago, Ben Seevers and Rob Thurtle began meeting weekly in a small, spider-infested storage space off of Rob's garage, lovingly referred to as the ((Cave)). The impetus was music, but their meetings quickly evolved into a vital exchange of influences, ideas, and art. The first Ether Staircase recordings were raw captures of improvised sessions, but as the years went on, their collective vision became clearer and the process became more composed and deliberate.

"Who Says You Can't" captures the many facets of Rob and Ben's sessions in the ((Cave)), as well as the evolution of their process. Snippets of old films, cries of unidentified animals, warbling thrift store cassettes, all populate the landscape for tracks that are as inspired by noise and musique concrète, as they are influenced by beat tapes and dream pop. As multifarious as this release is, it coheres around its evocation of a time and a place where impulse was given free rein as a means to explore consciousness and creativity.
